Good morning, welcome back to the Mobile Oil Change Podcast. I'm Tyreese, and we run a mobile oil change company, M O M S, out of Philly. Thirteen years of driveways, dead batteries, and customers who remember exactly when you were late but never when you were early. This is the show where we talk about what's actually happening in this industry, boots on the ground. And something happened Friday that I can not stop thinking about.
Look, I'm scrolling through shop news Friday morning — that's what I do with my coffee now, don't judge me — and I see this headline. A company called Autocom pushed out a software update this Friday, their release numbered twenty twenty-six point ten, and buried in it is E V and hybrid battery state-of-health testing. I had to read it twice, because I thought, wait, that can't be right.
Here's the thing. In every electric car, the single most expensive part is the battery. It's not close. A pack can cost more than the engine it replaces. And for years, if you wanted to know how healthy that battery actually was — not guess, actually know — you needed specialist equipment. The expensive, single-purpose kind. The kind the dealer has and the independent shop doesn't. The scan tools we already own were built for combustion engines. They'll read your check-engine light all day, but ask them about a high-voltage battery pack and they'd just shrug.
