Look, I pulled into the diesel lane this morning and the pump said six dollars and sixty something, and I just stood there for a second doing math I did not want to do. Here's the thing though, it's not just my lane. AAA's weekly fuel report, the one that came out this past Thursday, October eighth, says the national average for regular is four dollars and thirty-six cents. A year ago it was three dollars and eleven cents. And this is the first October on record where the national average has stayed above four dollars. Not the first week, not a blip, the first October, period.
Okay but why is nobody talking about the fact that this is the busiest "keep your car running" moment of the decade? Because that's what expensive gas actually means. When the payment at the pump goes up, people don't buy a new car. They squeeze more life out of the one they have. And get this, a travel site did the road trip math this week, seventy-one percent of Americans say they plan to drive on their next vacation. So everyone's about to drive more, in older cars, with gas at record prices for the season. That would absolutely eat on TikTok.
See, that's the part the guys in the industry press don't always connect. We've done this a hundred times. Gas spikes, customers get real about keeping what they own. The dealer's eight-year decline in service share we've talked about before, that didn't happen by accident. When gas is at a seasonal record, a customer who was thinking about trading in starts thinking about an oil change instead. Nah. That doesn't make sense? No, it makes perfect sense. The oil change is the cheapest confidence you can buy.
