Apply a thin layer of clean oil to the new filter’s rubber gasket. Fill the filter with oil first only if its position and access allow you to do so without spilling oil into the engine bay.
Thread the filter onto the mounting pad by hand. Tighten it according to the filter manufacturer’s instructions. Do not use a wrench to force it tighter unless the instructions specifically require it.
Using a funnel, add approximately 7 quarts of the correct oil with the new filter installed. Do not pour all 7 quarts in blindly if some oil remained in the engine.
Start with about 6.5 quarts. Then:
